Well, ain’t that a kick in the head

20 08 2010

And I was having a pretty good week, too.  Sold a crap-ton of stuff on eBay for some nice coin, got some DRC work that, just maybe, at least might requalify me for unemployment benefits, and actually had a good day shooting hoops.

So imagine my surprise when I discovered that Paul and I are being kicked out of our swanky downtown condo.

No, we’re not being evicted for anything we did.  Blame the idiot owner.  He wants to sell this place, and thinks he can do a better job of it if it’s empty.  I seem to recall some sort of aphorism about a bird in the hand being worth something, but it escapes me now…

Seriously, this guy is a loon with far too much money.  Paul did a little snooping online and discovered that this place was sold in 2006 for…guesses, anyone?  Anyone want to venture a guess?  1500 square foot condo, river view, 25 years old, needs a little work?

Try $650,000.

Even by Bend boomtown standards, that is just way, way, way too much.  And 2006 was just at the cusp of the market starting it’s long, long slide.

I personally think this guy must need the money, as he’s dropped the price on this place over the last few months down to $350K, and believe me when I say that, while this place is quite nice…it ain’t worth that much.  Seriously, if I (or even Paul and I) had around $210-$220 or so, we’d seriously consider making an offer on this place.  We’d have to sink at least ten grand into refurbishing the bathrooms and kitchens, just for beginners.

You would think that after having thirty-odd people look at this place over the past few months (and I certainly won’t miss that), this guy would have gotten the hint that $350K is too high, but as I continue to observe over the years, it’s not like this world isn’t filled with both a) stupid people and b) people who have no idea what to do with money.

Dollars to donuts sez this place is still vacant in six months unless he drops the price below 300K, mark my words.  And, yes, I am bitter because I hate moving.  But at least we have a month and a half to find hopefully similar place on the westside, and it remains a renter’s market.

I’ll definitely miss my riverview office and big comfy deck, but hopefully upgrade to a superior kitchen.

Hopefully I’ll have gainful employment by then, too, but we’ll see what happens.
